Major Goals
1. Improve self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-esteem
Objectives/treatment focus:
- Understand contributing factors to own low self-esteem
- Understand relationship between cognitive distortions and low self-esteem
- Address issues of negative self-talk
2. Decrease defensiveness
Objectives/treatment focus:
- Identify and address issues of denial and trust
- Increase awareness of defensive behavior, by providing examples and encouraging resident to identify similar behaviors in his life
- Address issues of defensiveness and counter-productive behavior in dealing with authority figures
3. Improve insight
Objectives/treatment focus:
- Increase understanding of relationship between underlying vulnerability, triggers, feelings, thoughts, choices or behaviors
- Increase understanding of pattern or “cycle” of problem behaviors
4. Improve coping
Objectives/treatment focus:
- Keep life in “balance” through effective cognitive coping
- Use effective coping skills to reduce impulsive behavior, and to provide enough time to evaluate options before acting
5. Develop appropriate communication skills and social skills
Objectives/treatment focus:
- Encourage appropriate expression of thoughts and feelings
- Teach assertive communication skills; and assertive body language
- Provide vignettes or situations to learn appropriate responses
- Role model and practice communication responses (verbal and non-verbal) for various situations and circumstances
6. Identify and address uncomfortable feelings
Objectives/treatment focus:
- Use new vocabulary to support expression of thoughts and feelings
- Identify specific feelings and issues more appropriate ways of coping with them
- Better management of anger Reduce potential for violence
7. Improve aspects of family dynamics
Objectives/treatment focus:
- Exploration and identification of family roles and boundaries issues.
8. Improve impulse control
Counselor activity.
9. Improve problem solving
Objectives/treatment focus:
- Identify personal needs and goals, and problem solve how to reach goals
- Encourage individual goal setting, and support efforts towards those goals
- Support adoption of new (positive) values
- Practice problem solving behavior and use of new coping skills
- Identify areas of concern and practice appropriate new responses
