1. Increased understanding of grief and loss
Objectives/treatment focus:
- Develop vocabulary to describe feelings of grief and loss
- Develop a short-term action plan for dealing with grief and loss
- Identify grief and loss issues Link losses with dependencies
- Identify steps toward managing grief
- Gain awareness, and accept that his grief and loss is causing him problems
2. Accept responsibility for change
Address issues underlying feelings of grief and loss.
Objectives/treatment focus:
- Identify issues of grief and loss from the past and resolve or let go.
3. Correct irrational thinking relating to past grief and loss
Objectives/treatment focus:
- Identify specific areas of cognitive distortion (“Stinking thinking”)
- Challenge irrational thoughts with reality
4. Deal with uncomfortable feelings resulting from grief or loss
Objectives/treatment focus:
- Deal with feelings of guilt about his grief, survivor guilt, “should haves,” “if onlys”
- Deal with feelings of sadness
5. Decrease extreme grief and loss
Decrease extreme grief and loss, reduce potential for substance abuse or other harmful behaviors relating to these issues.

- Learn coping techniques to address feelings resulting from grief
